Green Up Your Valentine's Day!
So we know that with Valentine's Day comes many presents, candies, flowers and chocolates and with these things come alot of garbage!
At today's February Eco Warriors meeting the Primary students created some tips to make your Valentine's Day more green!
Tip #1: Reuse Envelopes
When sending cards to others don't put their name on the front so that they may reuse the envelope with another card at a later date.
Tip #2: Candy Wrapper Art
Use all the individual candy wrappers to make a fun and colourful collage or other art project! Multiple candy wrappers can also be glued or taped together to make your very own Valentine wrapping paper!
Tip #3: Reuse Wrapping Paper and Bags
Carefully unwrap presents to keep wrapping paper from tearing so it can be used again. Tissue paper and gift bags can also be reused!
Tip #4: Reuse Chocolate Boxes
Use boxes from chocolates for art projects or to decorate to keep special things in!
Tip #5: Compost or Dry Flowers
Instead of throwing out flowers in the garbage once they die try composting them or if you really like them dry them out and press them to keep!
Tip #6: Reuse Cards
When you receive a card reuse the pictures or front cover of the cards for other purposes. At least you reuse about half the card!
Tip #7: E-Valentines
Just like ecards, e-valentines can be sent instead of paper cards that way there is no waste or recycling!
See if you can use some of these tips this Valentine's Day - Go green!!

Middle School Eco Conference - Thursday Jan 21, 2010!
Visit the Earth Ranger Centre by clicking here....
Mr. McLean, Ms. Perry and 10 Grade Seven Students' will be attending the Middle School Eco Conference on Thursday Jan. 21st, 2010.
The EcoSchools Middle School Conference aims to channel students’ idealism and build their skills and knowledge to organize green initiatives in their schools. This year’s conference takes place at the Earth Rangers Centre where students will have a chance to see for themselves how amazing a “green building” is and how it works.
Awakening students’ creative thinking shapes our program. Activities include a playful systems thinking exercise; a fresh look at assessing and reporting on school waste; and new ideas for developing engaging campaigns. Earth Rangers staff will also present a lively interactive session that will stimulate students’ connection to nature. Time for teams to begin planning next steps for starting or improving their EcoSchools program is built into the day.
We will be sure to write about our day!

Go Green for the Holidays!
Here are some tips for keeping green this holiday season!
1. Be creative with wrapping paper!
Why not use newspaper, the comics or other recycled paper products to do your wrapping? When receiving gifts unwrap the paper carefully so you can use it again. Reuse the wrapping paper or use it for student art projects! You can even use the white side of the paper to create your own new wrapping paper!
2. Using Plates, Cups and Cutlery
Make sure to use real plates, cups and cutlery over the holidays, even those left with cookies for Santa! Remember even though it's easy to clean up after a paper meal it's not that hard to wash some dishes!
3. Gift Bags and Tissue Paper
Similar to wrapping paper, if you receive a present in a gift bag with tissue paper reuse both items! Keep the bag and tissue paper in good condition and you can use it for future gifts!
4. Cards
Instead of using paper cards for the holidays send emails, post messages or send ecards! You can still give someone a present but send them an e-message instead!
5. Meals
Many holidays meals are very large and create a wealth of leftovers. Please use these wisely and not waste food. Make them into creative leftovers for your family to eat for future lunches or dinners. Remember keeping leftovers in reusable containers will keep the food fresh!
6. Travel
Many families do alot more travelling over the holidays. Make a plan with family and friends to carpool to events together or if family lives close enough, walk over! A nice walk home after a big meal is a great feeling!
7. Toys and Presents
Not everyone receives all the gifts they wanted but that doesn't mean we need to throw them out! If you receive gifts you do not want please donate them to charity or to someone you know who may enjoy it.
8. Store-Bought Gifts
Many store-bought gifts come in alot of unnecessary boxes, paper and packaging. If at all possible, avoid this by making your own gifts at home. Gifts such as baked goods, jewellery, pictures, frames, etc. can all be perfect gifts made at home!
9. Lights
Conserve energy by only choosing certain areas to decorate with lights in your home! Using energy-efficient LED lights can also help conserve alot of energy. Don't forget the best way to conserve energy is to remember to turn off the lights in areas of your home that are not in use.

How Does Your Garden Grow Mr. McLean.....

Our L.K.S. gardeners' weeded the flower beds in front of the Kindergarten classes. They planted bulbs and new shrubs. They also weeded and planted the small garden by the entrance to the school. We wish to thank the students, parent volunteers and the people who donated the bulbs, plants and shrubs. It looks beautiful! Thank you to everyone involved!
