Boomerang Lunch Program

Hey LKS,

Do you remember the Boomerang Lunch Program from last year??? Well, we are asking all of you to participate once again in this successful program to help reduce waste. Are you up for the challenge???

Here is a little reminder of the Boomerang Lunch Program.
“Boomerang” lunches are those that consist of absolutely 0% garbage! Yes, 0%!
Every piece of the student's lunch that is not consumed is to be returned home. This includes any leftover food, containers, recyclables, and even garbage.

The purpose of the “Boomerang Lunch Program” is to increase awareness in our students as to the amount of waste generated in one day’s lunch. Furthermore the program will encourage and enforce the use of reusable containers and eradicate disposable ones, thus helping to do our part in reducing the amount of garbage produced in our school.

What can I include in my “Boomerang” lunch?
☺Reusable lunch bag or box
☺Reusable containers for packing food (no foil, plastic wrap/plastic bags)
☺Reusable drink containers (thermos or reusable bottle)
☺Non-disposable cutlery and cloth napkin

Thank you and we appreciate your support,

Eco Warriors

2010/2011 Eco Warriors Have Arrived!!!

The Eco Warriors would like to invite everyone to join in on their first initiative of the year - Let the Sunlight In!

Starting on Monday, November 8th, students will be making an announcement after lunch (accompanied by some "sunny" music) reminding classes to turn off their lights for an hour and let the sunshine in. Students from the Eco Warriors group will then come around and help colour in some tracking charts (these charts will then be placed in our Eco Binder). Eventually, we hope that the Eco Warriors can encourage some of the younger students to learn to colour these charts in on their own. We hope that everyone can help us save electricity by letting some sunshine in!!

Also, a reminder to everyone of our Walking Wednesday program - Please encourage students to walk to school instead of using a car. Nov. 10th will be the first walking Wednesday and after this, it will be the first Wednesday of every month (Dec. 1, Jan.5, Feb.2, Mar.2, Apr.6, May 4, June 1).

Green Up Your Valentine's Day!

So we know that with Valentine's Day comes many presents, candies, flowers and chocolates and with these things come alot of garbage!

At today's February Eco Warriors meeting the Primary students created some tips to make your Valentine's Day more green!

Tip #1: Reuse Envelopes

When sending cards to others don't put their name on the front so that they may reuse the envelope with another card at a later date.

Tip #2: Candy Wrapper Art

Use all the individual candy wrappers to make a fun and colourful collage or other art project! Multiple candy wrappers can also be glued or taped together to make your very own Valentine wrapping paper!

Tip #3: Reuse Wrapping Paper and Bags

Carefully unwrap presents to keep wrapping paper from tearing so it can be used again. Tissue paper and gift bags can also be reused!

Tip #4: Reuse Chocolate Boxes

Use boxes from chocolates for art projects or to decorate to keep special things in!

Tip #5: Compost or Dry Flowers

Instead of throwing out flowers in the garbage once they die try composting them or if you really like them dry them out and press them to keep!

Tip #6: Reuse Cards

When you receive a card reuse the pictures or front cover of the cards for other purposes. At least you reuse about half the card!

Tip #7: E-Valentines

Just like ecards, e-valentines can be sent instead of paper cards that way there is no waste or recycling!

See if you can use some of these tips this Valentine's Day - Go green!!

Middle School Eco Conference - Thursday Jan 21, 2010!

Visit the Earth Ranger Centre by clicking here....

Mr. McLean, Ms. Perry and 10 Grade Seven Students' will be attending the Middle School Eco Conference on Thursday Jan. 21st, 2010.

The EcoSchools Middle School Conference aims to channel students’ idealism and build their skills and knowledge to organize green initiatives in their schools. This year’s conference takes place at the Earth Rangers Centre where students will have a chance to see for themselves how amazing a “green building” is and how it works.
Awakening students’ creative thinking shapes our program. Activities include a playful systems thinking exercise; a fresh look at assessing and reporting on school waste; and new ideas for developing engaging campaigns. Earth Rangers staff will also present a lively interactive session that will stimulate students’ connection to nature. Time for teams to begin planning next steps for starting or improving their EcoSchools program is built into the day.
We will be sure to write about our day!
