L.K.S. Kicks Off Earth Week!

We held our Earth WEEK kick off assembly today - it was great to see everyone wearing GREEN!

The Eco Warriors' video was amazing and it was so wonderful to hear all the many acts of GREEN @ L.K.S. The grade 4 - 8 students' enjoyed their guest speaker - Steve Bibla!

Earth Day Canada: Top 10 Actions

Earth Day Canada, a national environmental charity, is encouraging Canadians to renew their commitment to the environment this month as part of Earth Day 2009. The great part about Earth Day Canada's top 10 actions is that every one is doable today, so there's no reason why we can't starting doing our part. You know what they say: If everyone does their part, it will add up to big change.  1. Smart Shopping “Buy what you need, not what you want” Consider renting and borrowing things that are seldom needed Buy used items from garage sales and second-hand stores 2. Simple Savers Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs Use aerators on faucets and shower heads Weatherstrip windows and doors 3. Transportation Alternatives Walk, cycle, car pool and use public transportation When driving, reduce idling and maintain correct tire pressure Consider car sharing programs or renting 4. Food Choices Choose local and organic foods that are in season, and support local food producers Eat less meat 5. Washing and Drying Wash full loads of clothes in cold water and hang to air dry 6. Heating and cooling In the summer, set your thermostat to 24oC or 25oC In the winter, set your thermostat to 19oC or 20oC Install ceiling fans and programmable thermostats 7. L.K.S. Earth Week Challenge - Read the Blog!

We are challenging all of the students' at Lambton Kingsway to Read This Blog!  Over the next two weeks students' will have a chance to visit this blog and answer the questions listed below. On a recycled piece of paper - jot down your name and grade - and the answer to each of the questions! The Eco Warriors' want to congratulate the following classes for being the top classes for Walking Wednesday - April 1st.
Mrs. Gibson's class had 81 % of her class walk or bike.
Mrs. Bradshaw's class had 89 % of her class walk or bike.
Mrs. Moser's class had 100% of her class walk or bike to school! This is the second time that all of Ms. Moser's class has walked to school! They are great leaders in our school!
They are challenging all other class to get out and walk, bike or run to school! Our next Walking Wednesday will be May 1st but of course we encourage you to walk the talk everyday! Do you think we could all walk to school?

L.K.S. Powers Down For Earth Hour

At precisely 2 p.m. L.K.S. went dark!  Well...almost dark, we needed some lights for safety reasons but every class worked in the dark for the last hours of the school day.  Our Eco Warriors did a quick audit of the school and were impressed to find everyone participating!

We hope you and your family will participate in the Global Earth Hour - Sat. Mar. 29th from 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. - there are lots of activities happening across Toronto.

EcoSchools Middle School Leadership Conference 2009

On Tues. March 10th - Mr. McLean & I had the pleasure of taking 9 intermediate students to the EcoSchools Leadership Conference 2009 downtown Toronto. We had a great day which included a variety of workshops & presentations. Here is an overview of the workshops we participated in:

The Paper Lab
Paper use represents one of the largest impacts the TDSB schools and offices have on the environment. In this workshop EcoTeams discussed the changes necessary to reduce their school's impact. We entered Steve Bibla's "paper lab" where we calculated our school paper consumption and then strategized ways to make the switch to 100% recycled paper (CascadesEnviro100). Saving trees means saving energy, using less fossil fuels and water, thus limiting our impact on ecosystems and air quality. Together, we can make a difference.

The Waste Audit Challenge
Minimizing waste means using less stuff, reusing what you can, and recycling as much as possible. This workshop helped our EcoTeam to organize a waste audit of our school to reduce waste and improve recycling. Students were challenged to a waste audit where they sorted garbage, we recorded our findings and observations, and finally we made recommendations about how to reduce waste. We were surprised and had fun uncovering treasures found in another school's waste. We hope to educate our school this Earth Week by hosting a Waste Audit Challenge.

Energy In Your Life
The search for ways to reduce energy use in our schools never stops! School-wide energy conservation takes teamwork. Everyone needs to play a role including teachers, caretakers, principal, and students. This workshop taught us ways to identify both the renewable and non-renewable energy sources the Earth provides. We evaluated the energy we use in our daily lives and brainstormed solutions for the future.

The day was very informative and our students said they really enjoyed the opportunity to participate. We look to these students to help lead the charge in educating others to do what they can to reduce the impact of climate change!

Winter Walk Day @ L.K.S.

We had a wonderful turn out for the First Annual Winter Walking Day @ L.K.S.  We had over 50% of our students walking to school on Feb 11th.  Several classes had 90% of their class walk to school, which was amazing!  We hope to get everyone walking to school!

The Eco Warriors challenged all classes to walk to school for "Ontario Winter Walk Day" - Wed Feb. 11th. We asked teachers to submit a total so we could see how many people walked!

Wednesday, February 11, 2009 is Ontario's first annual Winter Walk Day for schools.
Walk to school for daily physical activity, a healthier environment, safer streets, making friends and ... having fun!

Keep the Heat In!

Eco Warriors hit the campaign trail this week with announcements encouraging all classrooms to close their blinds at the end of the day to "Keep The Heat In".  Individual classrooms will chart their own progress over the next month!  

Don't forget - another way to conserve energy is "Lights Out".  When students are not in the classroom - they should turn off the lights to help do their part in conserving energy!

Keep up the great work L.K.S. - remember every green act helps!

In a greater effort to conserve energy - individual classrooms will be challenged to close their blinds at the end of each day! Class reps will record on this chart each time they close their blinds to conserve energy! A simple way we can all keep the heat in and conserve energy!
